Tryfan class

The Tryfan Class Modular Cruiser was designed to replace the aging Nebula spaceframe used on the Hood Class Cruiser. After several years of research, the Tryfan Class Cruiser was approved for construction in 2409. It is the first craft to feature two hulls capable of individual warp-speed operation. The Tyfran class starship was introduced into service the Cocoon Fleet by Commodore Yaardack Stanfelth, Fleet XO of the 10th Fleet.

The verteron torpedo, larger than the photon or quantum torpedoes, disables the subspace systems of any vessel within a 5,000,000 kilometer spherical diameter within 20 seconds of detonation. At warp 1 this should place the source vessel outside the detonation range. The pod is designed to prevent launch of the torpedoes below warp 1 unless an override code is given.

The TRYFAN class Modular Cruiser was designed in 2409 as a replacement for the ageing NEBULA Class spaceframe, used as a basis for the HOOD-Class Modular Cruiser. The project called for a vessel that could fill the role of the HOOD-Class starship, using a spaceframe as flexible as the original NEBULA-Class - allowing for a projected life span of approximately 50 years.

With the developments in warp technology stemming from the SOVEREIGN-Class, it was possible to design a vessel capable of much higher warp speeds than the HOOD-class the TRYFAN-Class would replace.

The slender hull allows for a streamlined warp field around the vessel, making the ship capable of maintaining warp speeds comparible to the fastest of Federation starships. In addition, the TRYFAN-class is capable of operating as two individual starships, the primary 'Saucer' section, and the secondary 'Battle' section.
Whilst the Battle section retains the starship's primary warp propulsions systems, the Saucer contains a small warp reactor and two warp engines. One warp engine runs along the top of the vessel - just behind the bridge to just above the shuttlebay. A warp nacelle extends from beneath the ship on an adjustable pylon, following separation. Although the Saucer section is warp capable, it is unable to exceed Warp 4.6 safely. The Battle section, however, is capable of significantly higher warp speeds when separated from the Saucer section. Both the Saucer and Battle section contain impulse engines to drive them at sublight speed when separated.

This design serves two purposes. Firstly it allows the Saucer section to warp away from possible danger - be it an attacking vessel, or a core breach in the Battle section. Secondly, it allows the ship to co-ordinate operations, and effectively be in two places at once - attacking an enemy vessel from two directions, or responding to two different emergencies.

Though the secondary hull, when separated, possesses a significant amount of the ship's armament and is capable of high warp speeds, there comes a disadvantage with the TRYFAN-class design. When separated the hull integrity fields have to be boosted considerably to compensate for the lack of solidity in the secondary hull. This means that the secondary hull gains little power advantage from no longer needing to generate power for the primary hull, and often could result in extraneous demands being put on the power systems in a conflict situation.
Initially the designers discovered that sometimes the hull integrity field would falter even with only limited demands being put on the power systems. To this end a strengthened section of hull was introduced at the front of the secondary hull - containing the latch systems for attachment to the saucer section, this considerably boosted the strength of the secondary hull, and resulted in easier management of power systems.
One final consolation to the power problem is the secondary hull's low profile, and the fact that the large spaces between sections of it's hull make it a very difficult ship to hit. Tactical evasive maneuvers have been specifically designed for the TRYFAN-class to take advantage of this feature.
